Lower than Leh! Many travelers feel more energetic here, though the journey across the 5,359m Khardung La is the real challenge.

Known as the "Orchard of Ladakh," Nubra Valley is a stunning paradox. One moment you are driving through lush green villages fed by the Shyok River, and the next, you are standing in a vast, white-sand desert surrounded by snow-capped peaks.

1 The Hunder Sand Dunes

The "Silver Dunes" of Hunder are the crown jewel of the valley. This is where the landscape transforms into a high-altitude cold desert.

Bactrian Camel Rides

Nubra is the only place in India where you can find the double-humped Bactrian camel—a remnant of the ancient Silk Road trade routes. Riding these gentle giants across the dunes at sunset is an essential Ladakhi experience.

The Best Time for Dunes: Arrive at the Hunder dunes around 5:00 PM. The golden hour light turns the sand into silk, and the mountains take on a purple hue that is perfect for photography.

2 Diskit Monastery

Perched high on a hill overlooking the valley, Diskit is the oldest and largest monastery in Nubra.

🧘

The Maitreya Buddha

Standing at 32 meters tall, the magnificent statue of the Maitreya Buddha faces the Shyok River. It was built to promote world peace and protection for the valley.

Inside the monastery, you can find ancient frescoes and a prayer hall that offers a deep sense of calm. The panoramic view of the valley floor from the monastery rooftop is unparalleled.

3 Turtuk Village: A Hidden Oasis

Opened to tourists only in 2010, Turtuk is a culturally distinct village just a few kilometers from the Line of Control (LoC).

🍑

Apricots and History

Unlike the rest of Ladakh, Turtuk is inhabited by the Balti people. The village is lush with apricot and walnut trees and features unique stone architecture. It’s significantly warmer and lower in altitude than Leh.

  • Visit the Balti Heritage Museum
  • Walk to the LoC viewpoint
  • Try "Moskot," a local Balti dish made with walnuts and buckwheat

4 Travel Tips for Nubra

🛣️
The Journey: You must cross Khardung La to reach Nubra. It is a 5-hour drive from Leh. Avoid spending more than 20 minutes at the top of the pass to prevent altitude sickness.
🎒

What to Pack for Nubra

  • Cotton scarf (to protect from blowing sand at Hunder)
  • Light sweater for the day, heavy jacket for the night
  • Postpaid BSNL or Airtel SIM (Jio works in some parts of Diskit)
  • Plenty of spare camera batteries (the cold desert air drains them fast!)
